Physician-Seaman Darrell Sedgwick Succumbed Friday

Services were held Saturday for Dr. Darrell Sedgwick, 57, of Capitola.
He died Friday in Santa Cruz.
An avid seaman, he sailed the 40-foot sloop Viaje to Hawaii in the 1961
Trans-Pacific yacht race, and also owned a 35-foot Japanese built ship, the
Scorpio. His crew in that 1961 race were Skipper Kent, Bert Snyder Jr., Jim
Perry of San Jose and Gordon Gardner of Oakland.
He was a past commodore of the Elkhorn Yacht Club, member of the
Transpacific Yacht Club, the American Medical Assn., the Santa Cruz County
Medical Assn., and th Elks Club.
Dr. Sedgwick received his medical degre from Stanford University in 1944.
He went to the China-India-Burma theater during World War II, and was there
until 1948, when he returned to Capitola and his medical practice.
Born in [Spreckles, near] Salinas, he was a fifth generation Califronian.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Horton Sedgwick of Capitola, two sons,
D. Kenneth Sedgwick of Soquel and E.W.B. Winnett of Savannah, Ga.; four
daughters, Stephanie Chandler of Costa Mesa, Donise Sedgwick of Long Beach,
Mrs. Mark Taylor of San Juan Batista, and Mrs. Richard Duoos of Santa Cruz; a
sister, Mrs. Robert Leavitt of Cupertino; a brother, Dr. Charles J. Sedgwick
of San Diego, and eight grandchildren.
Services were held at White's Chapel, 138 Walnut Ave., with private
inurnment following.
Contributions are preferred to a charity of personal choice.
