Obituary for Evelyn Barclay Donohue

Evelyn Barclay Donohue, of Dayton, Wash., passed away peacefully on Friday, July 24, 2009, at the Booker Rest Home. She was 87 years old.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert, who died in 2006.

Evelyn was born Sept. 27, 1921, in Dayton, to Edgar and Ina Barclay. She grew up on the Whetstone farm six miles northeast of town. After graduating from Dayton High School in 1939, she attended Washington State University.

On March 8, 1944, Evelyn married Hubert F. Donohue, also of Dayton. After the wedding in Salt Lake City, the U.S. Army Air Corps sent Hubert to England, from where he flew 30 missions as a B-17 pilot over Nazi-occupied Europe. During this time, Evelyn lived in Spokane and underwent treatment for tuberculosis. With the end of World War II, Hubert returned from overseas and the couple started farming and raising their four sons.

Evelyn was an active member of several organizations, including P.E.O., Grace Episcopal Church of Dayton, Bridge Club and the Democratic Party. Like many of her generation, Evelyn played a variety of roles during her long life. She was a faithful daughter, loving wife and mother, and excellent cook - famous for her corn chowder. Evelyn was also a political confidante, amateur painter and farm management strategist. She even had her private pilot's license.

Though Evelyn's life was devoted to her family and farm, she also loved to travel. She and Hubert took several trips to Europe, Asia and Australia. In the 1970s and '80s, they lived part-time in Olympia while Hubert was serving in the Washington state Senate. Wherever they were, Evelyn's warm smile and welcoming manner assured many friendships.

Evelyn is survived by one sister, Aluerdine McQuary of Clarkston; four sons, Randall, Timothy, Ryan and Kelly; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Glen Nysoe Fund, 638 Wagon Road, Dayton, WA 99328.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Hubbard-Rogg Funeral Home, 111 S. Second St. in Dayton, under the direction of Merchant Funeral Home of Clarkston
