Narrative

From information compiled by Marlene Savage:

Information concerning Sarah comes from the probate records of her husband Samuel, in 1825, in Guilford County NC, and the 1830 and 1840 federal census of the same county. Only her married name is given on any of the records.

The will of her husband calls for Sarah to live with son, William, on the "home place" and at her death, William was to have the land as his. Their section of the plantation, included the house and outbuildings, and it was located on the west side of the road that ran south from Greensboro to Elisha Mendenhall's Mill. The portion of the plantation which lay on the east side of the road was to be divided among her other three sons, Andrew, John and Eli. (This eastern portion of the land included the family cemetery according to the discription recorded at the time it was sold.) From discriptions of the land in the various deeds recorded in Guilford County, it seems the land would now be covered by the southern portion of Greensboro.

In 1828, it appears that William was heavily in debt. When he was unable to pay off some bonds which he owed to several neighbors, his interest in the land was sold at auction by the sheriff. In the discription of the land which William supplies to his creditors is the the phrase, "land on which my mother now lives", so apparently Sarah continued to live on the land as her husband had instructed. Fortunately, when the land was sold by the sheriff, Sarah's second son, Andrew was the highest bidder, so apparently her home was saved.

In 1830 census, Sarah is listed as the head of her household, and her age was between 50 and 60. Also in the home were a man, age 20 to 30, which could be William; two men age 20 to 30, which could be Andrew and Eli. Also in the home were a girl age 15 to 20; and two girls age 10 to 15. More investigation is needed to establish their identity. All of Samuel and Sarah's daughters were married by that time. The older girl would probably be William's wife, Esther. The two girls born between 1815 and 1820 remain a mystery, but the possiblity exists that they were the children of deceased daughter Nancy Lane.

The 1840 census is the last record of Sarah as she is once again listed as the head of household. Sometime before the 1850 Census she apparently died or moved away from Guilford County. If she died, she could possibly have been buried in the family cemetery which was located on the land of her son, Andrew, across the road from her home. Unfortunately the cemetery no longer exists.

Sarah's identity as Sarah Lawrence is speculation from information on the Fountain Family site on Rootsweb, and requires much more research. Her birthplace is also from the website.
