MR. H. J. SCOTT PASSES AWAY
Was Well-Known Figure in Business World and Active as Motorist and Golfer
HAD LIVED HER SINCE BOYHOOD
The funeral will take place tomorrow at 1 o'clock from the residence, 1036 Craigdarroch Road, to St. Andrew's Presybterian Church, of Mr. Henry John Scott, who died on Sunday at the age of sixty-one years.
Mr. Scott was anative of Campbellford, Ontario, and came here with his mother at the age of sixteen. He was associated with the Hamilton Powder Company, which had works near Nanaimo, and later became manager of the Victoria office. There was a large demand for powder for colliery operations, and the business expanded, eventually being merged with the explosive interests in the Canadian Explosives Ltd., one of the Nobel Industries, Ltd. He became a director when the Victoria Chemical Company was merged, and of late years had charge of the real estate and insurance connections of the business, which is one of the most important explosive concerns in Canada.
He was a noted athlete in early days, an ardent cyclist and motorist. It was his love for motoring which led him to be selected for the party which made the Coast to Calgary pathfindtng trip. Mr Scott also played football, and of late had been a member of the Colwood Golf and Country Club.
He was identified with St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, and was a member of St Andrew's
Lodge. A F. and A.M.. under whose auspices the funeral will be held. Rev. H P. S. Luttrell officiating. Mr. Scott was attached to both the Union and Pacific Clubs here.
The family are the widow and seven children: Messrs Matthew Henry Scott and Stewart Dacre Scott, of Los Angeles; Mr. W. Gilling Scott, Victoria; Miss Anna Gertrude, Victoria; Mr. Thomas Brainerd Scott, Cowichan Lake; Mrs. Slyvester Paul and Mrs. G. C. Henderson, of Vancouver.
One son. Lieut. Blayney Scott, M.C. died soon after his return from overseas as the result of gas poisoning at the front.
