Narrative

Along with his brothers Matthew and Gilling, Blayney volunteered for the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force at the start of WWI. In 1916 he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps as an Officer. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for an action in which he climbed onto the wing of his aircraft to plug a bullet hole in the petrol tank.

In a letter home dated Oct. 1918 he described another incident

"They shot our old bus to pieces but luckily didn't hit my pilot and only managed to get me with the last burst as we crossed the lines.... the kid [pilot] sure had them buffaloed to a fare-thee-well... The kid kept his head all hte time and the next thing I knew I was in a dressing station and they were cutting my clothes off. He sure is a wonder that kid and landed me 300 yds from a Field Hospital. The fact that he did, making a perfect landing in a machine that was a 'write off' was the one thing that saved my bacon..."

He returned home but died of war-related injuries.

According to the obituary notice of his father in The Daily Colonist (May 1, 1928), the injuries were related to poison gas, but this may be in error.
