William Armistead, " newspaper of 1739 mentions marriage of Mr. William Armistead, son of Col. Henry Armistead of Gloucester Co., to a dau. of James Bowles dec'd, one of the Council of Maryland, and grand-dau. of Tobias Bowles, formerly a merchant in London in the Virginia trade. The will of James Bowles, styling himself "of St. Marys County in the Province of Maryland, merchant," dated June 13, 1727, probated January following, mentions daughters Eenor (sic) Bowles, Mary Bowles, and Jean Bowles, and wife Rebecca and uncle George Bowles. The Eleanor before mentioned, m., 1st, William, son of Gov. Sir Wm. Gooch of Va., and, 2nd, Warner Lewis, the tombstone of her son Warner Lewis, who d. Dec. 30, 1791, aged 44, calling him " eldest son of Warner Lewis and Eleanor Gooch, widow of William Gooch and the daughter of James Bowles of Maryland." James Bowles's wife Rebecca appears in note to Official Records of Robert Dinwiddie as having m., 1st, Bowles, brother of General Bowles of the British Army, and as being a daughter of Thomas Addison by his w. Elizabeth, dau. of Thomas Tasker, Treas. of Maryland. The will of William Armistead, dated Dec. 30, 1755, names the following sons (see Hening's Statutes), "
