Grubb Family Tree

John Barcroft Haughton of Cleve Hill was born in 1750 in Mallughmast, County Kildare, Ireland of a Quaker family. He was the son of Benjamin Baughton and Elizabeth Pearson.

John set up a business in Cork in 1799 and became a well known and prosperous merchant. He was an iron merchant, importing iron and hardware from England, Wales and the Baltic with his business premises based in North Main Street, Cork.

He married Sarah Cambridge in 1775 and they had 15 children. About half of their children died in infancy.

In 1798, John invested in a large mill and land at Kilnap, Cork. He let the mill to his son in law, Archibald Christy Shaw, a Quaker from Lurgan in County Armagh who was married to John's daughter Helena.

John went bankrupt a few years later during the depression that followed the Napoleonic wars. His son in law Archibald Christy Shaw also went bankrupt. People were assigned to help him and his son in law, Thomas Samuel Grubb, married to his daughter Elizabeth, and Isaac Bell, a shipping agent and coal merchant, arranged the auction of John's property. They were unable to sell the Kilnap Mills and land however, and after they were re-advertised, John's son in law, Joshua Carroll, who was married to John's daughter Sarah, came up with the finance to purchase the Mills and land.

John was disowned by the Quaker monthly meeting in Cork as a result of his bankruptcy and inability to repay his creditors.

John was widowed in 1827 and he passed away in Cork in 1833.
