Catharina De Vos probably was born in Holland before 1630. She was the daughter of New Netherland pioneers Andries and Margarita Coeymans De Vos. They may have emigrated to New Netherland in 1641.
She appears to have married three times. Her first marriage to Arent Andriesse Bradt produced six children. In 1664, she married Barent Janse Van Ditmars who was killed in the raid on Schenectady in February 1690. In 1691, she married Claas Janse Van Bockhoven.
Catharina and all of her husbands were involved in the founding and establishment of Schenectady. She may have been a Schenectady resident regardless of her marital state. In 1697, her third husband was living in Albany without a woman in his household.
In January 1699, her husband filed a will that provided for Catharina's children.
In 1709, her name appeared on a Schenectady assessment roll. She had been a property holder there for many years.
Catharina De Vos is said to have died in Schenectady in 1712.
Narrative
According to John Sherman:
Catalyntje De Vos was born 1628 in Holland, Netherlands to Andries and Margrietje Pieterse Coeymans De Vos. She emigrated with her parents May 17, 1641 from Amsterdam, Holland, arriving August 20, 1641 at New Amsterdam, New York on the ship DEN EYCKENBOON. They were originally Huguenot refugees from France. Catalyntje married Arent Andriessen Bradt in 1648 at Albany, Albany County, New York and their children were: Aeffje, Ariaantje, Andries, Cornelia (#83441117), Samuel and Dirck. After the death of her husband Arent November 12, 1662 at Albany, she married Barent Janse Van Ditmars and they had a son - Cornelius. On the evening of February 8, 1690, when the town of Schenectady was sleeping, a party of more than 200 Canadien French and allied Mohawk, Sault and Algonquin warriors attacked the unguarded community, burning nearly all the homes and killing or capturing most of the inhabitants. Only a few escaped to nearby Albany. Among those killed were Catalyntje's husband Barent Van Ditmars and their son Cornelius. Also, son Andries by Arent and his son. After these hard times, Catalyntje married Claas Janse Van Boekhoven at Schenectady later in 1691. She died, having outlived Claas, July 23, 1712 at Schenectady and is buried there.
