He was educated at University of Manchester. He worked as a Chemisrty lecturer, Sunderland Technical College from 1902 to 1906 in Sunderland, County Durham. He emigrated to Canada in 1906. He worked as a Research Chemist, Dominion Iron & Steel Co. from 1906 to 1907 in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada. He worked as a Researcher - Dominion Investigation of Canadian Coals, McGill University from 1907 to 1910 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He worked as a Chief Engineering Chemist, Fuel Testing Division, Federal Bureau of Mines from 1910 to 1921. Also, Chief chemical engineer to the Lignitic Utilisation Board 1917-1921 He worked as a Chief Research Engineer, Scientific & Industrial Research Council from 1921 to 1946 in Alberta, Canada. In 1928, he was appointed Canadian representative at the World Power Conference in London.
