Raymond Eugene Sturges
June 27,1925 - December 12, 2016
Roseville, California
Raymond E. Sturges passed away peacefully at home in Roseville, California, after 91 active and fulfilling years. Raised in Santa Monica with his brother John, Ray graduated Santa Monica High in 1943, then served in Italy as a B25 Bomber pilot during WWII. Ray married Virginia Raymond in 1948 while in his senior year at UCLA. His 40 year insurance career started in 1949 with INA. In 1960 he opened The Sturges Insurance Agency in Santa Clara. He and Dick Garland co-founded Garland-Sturges & Company in 1964, a successful business that continued well beyond Ray's retirement in 1990.
Ray and "Ginger" raised 3 sons in Santa Clara, moving to Los Gatos in 1965. They frequently vacationed in the Sierras and built a cabin near Truckee. Nearing retirement, they moved to the Monterey area in 1988 and became avid golfers. In 2003 they relocated to Rocklin where Virginia died two months after their 55th anniversary. Ray liked to talk about their years together, and never stopped missing her.
Ray was a founder and chairman of the San Jose SouthWest YMCA, chairman of the San Jose Better Business Bureau, president of the West San Jose Rotary, and president of the Independent Insurance Agents Assn, to name of few of his many service activities.
Ray moved to Sun City, Roseville in 2005 where he met Elizabeth Schultz,a loving companion during his last years. Those who knew Ray were blessed by his hospitality, positive attitude, generosity and integrity.
He is survived by a loving family: Craig and Diane Sturges of San Jose, CA, Mark and Deborah Sturges of Petaluma, CA, Doug and Kathy Sturges of Rocklin, CA, including eight grandchildren (Shannon, Stephanie, Brian, Eve, Clare, Andrew, Beth, Hannah Mae), and ten great grandchildren.
