Althea Katherine “Katie” Oakes, age 83, of Tumwater, Washington, passed away February 24, 2013 at the Puget Sound Healthcare Center. She was born March 11, 1929 in McCleary, Washington the daughter of Fred and Elsie (McMinn) Von Bargen.

Katie graduated from William Winlock Miller High School in Olympia in 1947. She met her future husband, Arthur D Oakes at the East Side Trading Company where he worked with her father. They married on May 22, 1948 in Tumwater, Washington. He preceded her in death in 1984.

Katie loved music, dancing, traveling and playing cards with her three daughters, but most of all she loved visiting with family and friends. Her travels took her to Australia, Panama Canal, France, Mexico, Canada and throughout most of the United States. She spent many years researching hers and her husband’s family history with her daughter Karen.

Katie is survived by her children; Lois (Tim) Lindsey of Auburn, WA, Rodney Oakes, Ginny (Larry) Schenck both of Olympia, WA. Five grandchildren: Amy (Jeremiah) McMahan, Lisa (Mark) Kissler, Jessica (James) Stillwell, Adam and Andrew Lindsey. Three great-grand children: Matthew Stillwell, Sam and Ben McMahan. As well as her siblings: Norma Smith, Fred (Merry) Von Bargen, Jack (Mary Lou) Von Bargen, and Dennis (Ruth Ann) Von Bargen.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Karen Oakes, two half sisters Ruth Mack & Lucille Harrison, three half bothers, Clyde Rock, George and Robert Von Bargen.

Funeral services will be held at the Woodlawn Funeral Home, Cemetery & Cremation, in Lacey, WA. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 2nd, starting at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow the funeral.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests any remembrances be made in the form of donations to the ARC of Washington State, 2638 State Avenue NE, Olympia, WA 98506.
