Mrs. A. L. Maynard,
Now nearly 90
Niece of Sir Matthew White Ridley

As I stood inthe brilliant sun and watched the rippling of the waves, I began to fucusmy attention on this ancient village. The Skinningrove Iron Works on thetop of the hill and the overread traffic from Pease and Partners mineswhich supply the Iron works were almost still. It was Sunday. Having akeen interest in old buildings I noticed that houses near Itm's CoffeeHouse (Oh yes, fully licensed!) had been demolished. On inquiring Ilearnt they were built 200 years ago and today modern houses are beingerected. They are the first new houses to be erected for 70 years. Thechief reason for lack of building is that almost every available site isoccupied by Messrs. Pease and Partners for the Loftus mines which beganoperations in the 60's.
Timm's Coffee House was formerly theManor House, Skinninggrove, and Mrs. A. L. Maynard, now residing with herson-in-law and daughter, Capt. and Mrs. J. G. Wehl of Boosbeck, hasintersting connections. Mrs. Maynard, who will shortly celebrate her89th birthday, is well-known throghout the Thirsk and Northallertonarea. Formerly Miss Edith Harriet Ridley, daughter of the REv. H. R.Ridley, Vicar of St. Cuthberts, Durham, and nece to the late Sir MatthewWhite Ridley, she became the second wife of Mr. Anthony Lax Maynard, sonof Mr. John Charles Maynard, of Harsley Hall, Northellerton. Mr.Maynard, who was educated at Wolsingham and Shrewsbury Schools, was awell-known sportsman. He formerlyh resided at Show Hall, Darlington. His great uncle was a distinguished breeder of Shorthorns and in companywith the then Messrs. John and Robert Colling, first brought this famousbreed of cattle into reopute in North Yorkshire and South Durham and thesale of the celebrated bull Comet for the enormous sum of 1,000 guineasis still mentioned and recalled. A judge at the principal Agriculturalshows in England, Mr. Maynard was universally known as Anthony Maynard. On the death of his father, Mr. Maynard sold his property at Stokesley,Eryholme, and Harsley,m and took upresidence at the MNanor House,Skinningrfove, which he inherited from his mother who was Catherine, daughter and heiress of Mr. John Easterby, of Skinningrove. Owing to thecontinual opening of the Ironstones mines in that inflated period ofClevland prosperity, Mr. Maynard's property became gradulally intersectedby sworks, tramways and railiways and he went to reside at Nwton Hall,Darlington. He was the first Master of hounds for the North side ofDurham when the Durhamn County was divided. Mrs. Maynard who is in goodhealth was in her younger days very fond of hunting and when mounted onher favourite little mare, Butgtercup, could show most of her friends theway across country.
