Truman Allen Shattuck, son of Marquis E. and Doris (Graves) Shattuck, was born January 29, 1926, in Detroit, Michigan. He attended school in Highland Park and Detroit and was a student at Northern High School. He was a member of Central M.E. Church in Detroit and sang in the young people's choir. He was an active member of the Hi-Y Club, had been a member of Boy Scouts, and was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. Allen was accepted for voluntary induction into the United States Marine Corps at Detroit, Michigan, March 27, 1944, and was sent to San Diego, California, for training. On May 24, 1944, he was transferred to Co. H 3rd. Bn., 26th Marines, 5th Marine Division, Camp Pendelton, Oceanside, California, where he went after a furlough of ten days. In strict obedience to orders, Allen's fine sense of honor and loyalty kept him from giving any of his friends or relatives even an inkling of where he was stationed overseas until he reached Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945, and these letters, in which he was permitted to identify his location, did not reach his home until after his death which occurred while in action on Iwo Jima March 2, 1945. The family later learned from his diary that his regiment "embarked for overseas duty on July 22, 1944, and arrived at Camp Tarawa, on the island of Hawaii, July 30." Late in January, 1945, his unit was transported to the Mariana Islands to join the invasion force being assembled to attack the Volcanic Islands. In the campaign on Iwo Jima, Allen's company operated as a machine-gun unit. After eleven days of continuous fighting the unit was advancing over very broken, rough terrain when a Jap sniper, who had been by-passed by the advancing Marines, began firing from behind the American lines. Allen, who had just been made a machine-gunner, was shot. He died before they could get him to a first-aid station. His body was buried in the Third Division Cemetery. In the fall of 1947, the operation begin for the removal of the bodies of all Americans buried on Iwo Jima for reburial in permanent cemeteries, and Private Truman Allen's body was returned to the United States. Reburial in Woodlawn Cemetery, Detroit, followed services in the Wm. R. Hamilton Chapel, on April 24, 1948.
