Narrative

From to the Belfast Herald, May 6, 1880:

"A commercial traveller named Arthur Grubb disappeared from the Fleetwood steamer during her voyage to Belfast on Tuesday night. It is supposed he jumped or fell overboard."

From the Irish Times, May 6, 1880:

"A very painful occurrence took place on board the mail steamer Duke of Connaught during the passage from Fleetwood to Belfast this morning. Among the cabin passengers was Mr Arthur Grubb, representative of Messrs. Bull and Wilson, warehousemen, London. He seemed depressed in spirits. When the steamer was passing the Mull of Galloway at two o'clock he was observed standing on the deck near the stern, gazing listlessly into the water. Soon afterwards he had disappeared, and search was made for him, but in vain. The only inference, therefore, is that he jumped or fell overboard and was drowned."

From the Londonderry Sentinel, May 8, 1880:

The disappearance of Mr. Arthur Grubb still remains a mystery, and it is now believed that he fell overboard accidentally, as he was last seen standing near the stern of the Duke of Connaught at about half-past two o'clock. Mr. Grubb's employers, Messrs. Bull & Wilson, wholesale warehousemen, were informed of the melancholy occurrence by Mr. Jury of the Imperial Hotel, Belfast. Meanwhile strict inquiries are being made into the matter, which is the subject of general conversation."

From the Derry Journal, May 10, 1880:

"Mr. Thomas Grubb, 17, Kenlworth-road, Rathgar, Dublin, writes: Having come to Belfast to make inquiries in reference to the supposed loss of my brother, Mr. Arthur Grubb, while crossing to Belfast, on Tuesday night last, I am surprised, and much regret to find, that some papers have suggested the idea of suicide. I shall esteem it a favour if you will contradict such a statement, for which there is no foundation. From all the facts I have learned I can only conclude the circumstances of his loss were the result of accident. I trust his friends and all who know him will suspend judgment until further evidence is produced."

From the Weekly Irish Times, May 15, 1880:

GRUBB - Accidentally drowned while crossing from Fleetwood to Belfast, on the morning of 5th May, Arthur Grubb of 52 St. Martin's Lane, London; deeply beloved and regretted."

From the Londonderry Sentinel, May 20, 1880:

"The body of Mr. Arthur Grubb, a gentleman who, on the night of the 4th inst., disappeared from the Fleetwood steamer while on the passage to Belfast, was discovered on Monday in Killough, county Down coast. The body was identified by letters found on the person."

From the Newry Reporter, May 22, 1880:

"INQUEST AT KILLOUGH. - At an inquest held in Killough on the remains of Mr. Arthur Grubb, recently found on the shore at Nelson's Port, the body was identified by the brother of the deceased. Evidence was given to show that Mr. Grubb had left Fleetwood for Belfast on the 4th of May by the steamer Duke of Connaught, that on the arrival of the vessel at Belfast he was missed, and that he had not since been seen alive. When commencing his journey he was in good health and spirits. The jury returned a verdict of found drowned."
