Narrative
KATY, Texas — Arlene Hall Work went to be with her Lord on Aug. 28, 2015 in Katy, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her oldest son, Robert Clifton Work in 1997 and her sister, Bobbie Hall Ward, in 2015.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Jim. Other survivors include their son Tim of Katy, Texas and his four children, daughter Garnett Payne and granddaughter Morgan of Frisco, Colorado, daughter-in-law Sandra of Chandler, Arizona and her daughters.
Arlene was born on Dec. 1, 1926 in Durham. She grew up, attended school in Roxboro and graduated from Roxboro High School. She graduated with an Associate degree from Averett College in Danville, Virginia and with a Bachelor of Arts degree and a teacher’s certificate from Meredith College in Raleigh. She taught school in Winston Salem, Caswell County, and High Point, where she met James Work.
Jim and Arlene were married in Roxboro on March 31, 1951 and went to Wilmington to live. They lived in a number of places as Jim’s engineering career took the family to Burlington, Lynchburg, Virginia, Idaho Falls, Idaho, Greensboro, Costa Mesa, California, again to Greensboro, and finally to Houston/Katy, Texas in 1976.
Arlene taught school in several of these places and was active in her churches and the Christian Women’s Clubs.
A memorial service at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, Houston, will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4.
In lieu of flowers, Arlene requested memorial gifts to Barium Springs Home for Children in Statesville, N.C.
