Richard Cambridge Whitla Grubb was born on 23 September 1899. He was the son of William Pike Grubb and Ethel Elizabeth Buchanan. He married, firstly, Mary Isabel Hunter, daughter of William Hunter, on 1 September 1925. He and Mary Isabel Hunter were divorced in 1945. He married, secondly, Kathleen Eunice Fowler, daughter of William John Fowler, on 7 June 1947.
He was a civil servant, writer and broadcaster on landscape gardening. He was educated at St Columba's College, Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland. He lived at Clogheen, 96 Circular Road, Strandtown, Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland.
