Narrative

Caption of a sepia-toned photograph uploaded by gwendygb1 of Bend Oregon:
Nicknamed "Nina" by her family, she is shown here at about age 16, wearing a Worth gown from Paris. In 1867 and 1868, W.I. Newton and his wife toured parts of North Europe and Africa, accompanied by their daughter, "Nina." Part of the reason for the trip was for Major Newton to renew contacts with calvalry officers he had known at the Saumur Calvalry School. A letter from his wife to their daughter "Bessie" (Elizabeth) written from Algiers in 1868 indicates that Nina spent part of her time there sewing a "walking suit."
