The surname ZELIFF is spelled many different ways:
Zeluff, Zeluffe, Zeliffe, Zealoff, Zilaff, Zelof, Ceilo, Selof, and Siclo, (2) very early spellings, to name a few.
-------------------------------------------------
Named as a son of Solomon Zeliff(e) in the "History of Edward Poole, of Weymouth, Mass.", 1893, by Edward Murray Poole, Appendix VII, page 147. A notation that he fought in the WAR of 1812. This contributor found this last piece of information regarding Solomon's service in the WAR of 1812 to be incorrect, as files did not reveal his participation.
-------------------------------------------------
Solomon's Zeliff's family is recorded in Floyd's Genealogical and Biographical Annals of Northumberland county, PA, 1911, page 174, noting that he moved from Tioga County, and is buried in Northumberland, Northumberland county, PA. A surviving copy of a letter written by daughter Margaret (Zeliff) Roach in 1902 notes that her father and mother are buried in Riverview Cemetery, in Northumberland. She also named her brothers and sisters:
Mary, Benjamin, Jane, Margaret (self), and Tom, noting that Benjamin and Jane died before reaching adulthood and marriage.
-------------------------------------------------
In the 1820 US PA Census, Solomon is living in Point Twp., Northumberland county, PA, where he is listed as "head" of household, between 16 and 26 years. In addition, there are (2) females living with him. One his wife (Isabella), the other, a female child (Mary). The 1830 census finds him residing in the same locale. He lists his age as between 30-40, and (1) older female between the ages of 30-40 (Isabella). Additionally in this census Solomon has (2) female children, both under the age of (5) years (Jane and Margaret), (1) female child aged 10-15 year (Mary), and (2) male children, (1) under the age of 5 (Tom), and (1) aged 5-10 years (Benjamin). Solomon does not appear in the 1840 census records, and one might assume that he was deceased by then.
