Kin of early doctor, Mrs Grubb, 81, dies

Mrs. Elizabeth Stanley Grubb, 81, of 19208 Panorama Dr., Saratoga, granddaughter of one of the valley's first doctors, clbuwoman and wife of George C. Grubb, died Thursday in a Los Gatos hospital after an illness of four years.

Her grandfather, Pierre Lusson, was one of the first doctors in Santa Clara County and she was born on Aug. 22, 1893 on his property, Sunnywood, on Homestead Road, Cupertino.

Mrs. Grubb was graduated from San Jose High School in 1911 and attended San Jose State Normal School prior to graduating from Stanford with the class of 1917.

She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and won her numerals in long diving. She was president of Stanford Universitiy Women in 1917 and, as an undergraduate, worked in the registrar's office.

She obtained a master's degree from Stanford in 1918.

Earlier in 1914, she worked as a bookkeeper for Madsen Furniture Co. on First Street in San Jose.

While on a trip to British Columbia to visit relatives, she metGeorge C. Grubb, a 1911 graduate in engineering from University of California, and they were married on Jan. 22, 1919, in Trinity Episcopla Church, Second Street, San Jose.

For a few years, Grubb was associatd with Prune and Apricot Growers Assoc. in San Jose and then they moved to Montreal where he was general manager of the explosives division of Canadian Industries Ltd. for q18 years.

Forllowing his retirement, the Grubbs returned to Santa Clara County and they built a home at Panorama Drive where they have resided since.

Mrs. Grubb was a member of St. Andrwes Episcopal Church of Saratoga; P.E.O., Chapter C. A.; D.A.R., San Jose Chapter; Rotary Anns of Saratoa Rotary Club; a contributing member of YWCA an she was a former member of A.A.U.W.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son George C. Grubb of Los Gatos, a biology instructor at West Valley College; a daughter, Mrs. Gerald (Elizabeth) Hedden of Santa Barbara; a brother, Dr. Merlin Maynard of Saratoga; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday at St. Andrews Episcopla Church followed by interment at Oak Hill Memorial Park. Arrangements were by West Valley Chapel.
