Anthony Lax Maynard, the eldest of eleven children of John Charles and Catherine Grace (Easterby) Maynard. He inherited the estate of Skinningrove from his mother, the only surviving heir of Mr. John Easterby of Skinningrove and Whitby.

Anthony Lax Maynard was married twice, first in 1843 to Elizabeth Jane Wilkinson of Harperly Park, Durham, who died in 1873. After her passing he married Edith Harriet Ridley of Northumberland, who survived Mr. Maynard by several decades.

In 1847, Mr. Maynard and Mr. Samuel Okey discovered the "Cleveland Main Seam" of ironstone on Mr. Maynard's Skinningrove property. He developed the first ironstone mining operation at there, which began shipping ore in 1848. Within three years other sources of high-quality iron had been discovered in Cleveland, resulting in the "Great Iron Rush". In the peak years of the 1880s, the industry employed some 10,000 miners and produced six million tons of ironstone per year.
