Narrative

Work, Ralph WEST SAND LAKE Ralph Work who was more commonly known to close friends and family as "Mike" died January 25, 2016, in Troy. Mike was born on July 5, 1920, in Ithaca, and was one of four children born to the late Professor Paul Work and Grace Nicholas Work. Mike attended Cornell University where he received both his undergraduate and graduate degrees. He was a member of the Cornell Chapter of the Gamma Alpha Graduate Scientific Fraternity. In 1943, Mike enlisted and served as an Aviation Cadet Trainee in the Armed Forces and served his country until he was Honorably Discharged in 1946. Mike continued his public service with the United State's Department of Agriculture (USDA) as a Soil Scientist for over 40 years until his retirement in the early1990's. Mike was predeceased by his loving wife of 52 years, Eleanor Smith of Rutland, Vt. They had a son, Aaron William Work, who was born in 1956 and died shortly after birth. Mike was an avid collector of bottles, stamps, railroad memorabilia, coins and fishing stories. Mike particularly enjoyed fishing the pristine lakes of Vermont. Mike was a lifelong supporter of Trout Unlimited and donated many days improving habitat along the Battenkill and Hoosick Rivers. For a time, Mike was an active small caliber target shooting enthusiast and brought home many trophies. Mike particularly enjoyed duck and upland bird hunting in Rensselaer and Washington Counties. In addition, Mike was a lifelong member of the Boy Scouts. Mike's enjoyment of the outdoors included tramping around many Hudson Valley farms. His extroverted and friendly demeanor often resulted in receipt of permission to "pick" old farm dumps for nineteenth century bottles. Over the years, he and his wife Eleanor assembled one of the finest collections of Saratoga type carbonated water bottles. Mike donated the majority of his collection to the National Bottle Museum, of which he was a founding member. In addition to his wife and son, Mike was predeceased by his sister Margaret Work Stone; and brothers, Richard Work and William Work. Mike is survived by many nieces and nephews who are spread far and wide across this great country that he loved so dearly. His humble and affable nature will be missed by all those who knew him. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The National Bottle Museum, 76 Milton Ave. Ballston Spa, NY, 12020. To leave a message for the family, please visit LGFuneralHome.com
