Narrative
Castle Grace, with between 1,000 and 2,000 acres of land at different times, running up into the Knockmealdown Mountains, has remained Grubb property for 150 years to the present day. It is so called from the ruins of a twelfth century Anglo-Norman castle built by the Norman Raymond Le Gros on the banks of a small river, formerly known as the Ountearr, shortened to the "Tar" which flows into the River Suir, near to which a grist mill used to stand. The estate was bought on the marriage of Samuel Grubb, third son of Samuel and margaret Grubb (Chapters Seven and Nine) to his second cousin, Deborah Davis (d. 1885), in 1820. (See Collateral Table "F".) Samuel Grubb built new mills in 1829, and a large gracious and imposing "E" shaped house. The castle occupies over one acre in extent, is remarkably well preserved with a tower at each angle, and is regarded as one of the rfinest of Irelands 3,000 ruined castles.
